The course provides an introductory overview on gender issues and helps you to increase your awareness about the impact of gender and its effect on women and men at the individual, family, organisational, political and social level. It also enables you to analyse various subjects through the gender lens, including issues related to: work, sociology, psychology, social policy, politics, law, economics, health, culture and poverty.
The programme of studies will allow you to become more assertive, improve your debating and writing skills and to become more conscious of your biases and stereotypes. It also enables you to spot injustices that stem from inequalities between women and men. The course can also serve as a bridge to further your studies at tertiary level and will allow you to join the third year of the Bachelor in Work and Human Resources (Honours) course, among others.
Applicants admitted under paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations must be in possession of qualifications and experience that would satisfy the Board of Studies, through an interview, that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit. Applicants admitted in terms of this paragraph shall be in possession of a pass in an English language proficiency test as approved by the University before being admitted to the Course, provided that applicants in possession of a Secondary Education Certificate pass at Grade 5/GCE Ordinary Level pass at Grade C or higher in English or a pass at the same standard in a comparable qualification, shall be exempted from sitting for the proficiency test.
Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an English Proficiency Test to be held on 3 September 2021. Successful applicants will then be required to sit for an interview sometime during the same month. Once announced, dates cannot be changed. Such applicants shall be exempted from sitting for the proficiency test if they are in possession of a pass at SEC level English at Grade 5 or better or equivalent. The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' (those who will be sitting for the proficiency test and/or interview) is 24 August 2021 at 2pm. The closing date for other applicants is 30 September 2021.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Diploma in Gender, Work and Society - Dip. GWS - under the auspices of the Centre for Labour Studies in collaboration with the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

How to converse and discuss effectively in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary atmospheres about gender, work and society.

The knowledge, skills and competences gained from this course will enable you to give a valuable input to the implementation of gender mainstreaming, equality and human rights, which have become an integral part of government policy. The course is also suitable if you are interested in continuing your studies in areas related to human resources and gender studies. If you get an average mark of 60% or more, you may be allowed to join the third year of the Bachelor in Work and Human Resources (Honours) course (conditions apply).
